what kind of 4wd system is in a toyota rav 4? will it give grip to the opposite wheel if it spins in mud?

it is a 2.0d4d 03 model it has no 4wd lock button on the dash, unlike older models, what does this button do?

The Mk1 had a button to lock the centre differential, forcing the drive to be split equally between front & rear axles.
The newer ones use a viscous centre diff, which allows the wheels with most traction to be driven. They are actually pretty good off road when fitted with decent tyres, but the suspension design doesn’t give much ground clearance for rough stuff.

that switch is for the 4wd. it electronically engages the transfer case similar to putting an automatic in gear. vs having to manually engage the transfer case with a shifter. as for giving traction to the opposite gear, when you engage the 4wd it should only engage one tire up front and one in the rear. unless you have say “a limited slip differential” or electronic traction control, which would help keep traction by allowing both tires to spin or the power to go to the tire that isn’t spinning. for true 4 wheel traction, you’d need a locker. however you’d need to put some solid axles ( like what you see under the rear end in a pick up)

The Rav 4 was not really designed for off road and has a basic 4×4 on road drive train.
